I had an opportunity to hire a team using the Feng Shui Energy Elements again this past spring.  My client wanted to test a new venue to see if their footwear could sell in a casual, nonthreatening environment.

I had restrictions with signage and advertising as we were part of a larger group. Therefore, I had to change my plan: my intuition to use large, colorful superlatives on our signage was discarded.

The only tangible feng shui I could use was to unroll a large ‘welcome mat’ in front of the booth. I placed a chair on each side to invite people to sit down. (And, try on shoes.)

The win-factor was going to be in assembling the team.

How I was able to land a winning team?

To assemble a small team for my client, I had to decide which values and principles I needed for sales. The actual sales numbers would determine whether this could work as a viable sales venue; therefore, sales experience was important.  As this was a temporary assignment, it ruled out hiring many of the employed working people. I did not need long term commitments from my team, I just needed the end result.

I looked primarily for extroverts; people who had life experience, and could relate with the general public. I also needed organizational skills, punctuality and accountability. I also knew if I hired identical personalities, I’d have issues somewhere with scheduling.

• I pulled one gal out of retirement as I needed a wood-person for the morning shifts. This gal had an eye for details and could problem solve issues with event organizers or buying customers.
• I hired another lady that was already working part-time but would be happy to join our team. This gal is a fire-person. She loves to entertain and has the ability to attract people to her side. She doesn’t have an ‘off switch’, so I can book her anytime, or change her shifts without any friction.
• The third, a self-employed entrepreneur, agreed to take a break in her business. This lady had previous worked as an Executive Assistant; this tells me she has nurturing, earth qualities and could relate well to people.
• The last person on the team was much younger than the others. At around 30 yrs old, she provided a link to the younger buyers, and had the energy to restock the bins when new stock arrived. Primarily a metal person, her organizational skills were impeccable. (As we ended up selling 70-90 pairs a day, restocking the shoes became an issue.)

These ladies were all mature, confident individuals. I had full confidence in them to problem-solve along the way. And, they bonded easily.

With me in charge, primarily a wood person, our well-balanced team excelled in both of our two week tests!!! YAY!

When I found out we had met our sales goals and still had two more days to sell shoes, I was ecstatic! Meeting and exceeding sales goals can mean so many things: build self esteem, fulfillment, integrity and bonus money! My team was pumped and eager to work this gig again.

In all my years of selling tangibles, non-tangibles, projects and events management, I had never sold shoes before. Using the feng shui principles when hiring my team was the best thing I did!

I received, in the same envelope with my bonus cheque, a thank you letter from the General Manager, complimenting me on a job well done.
