Loving Your Home: Letting Go

Love Your Home, wherever you go…

It used to be ‘normal’ to be born, live and die all in the same house; or at least, the same city.

Society these days makes it possible, and probable, for people & families to move more frequently. This could be related to a fluctuating job market, unstable politics or perhaps a marriage commitment; ‘for better or worse’.

So many people have shared with me their angst, about relocating this year! There seems to be a mass movement!

We are all connected to everything we own, everything under our roof and to the building itself. Changing locations is a major upheaval; nothing is more stressful than moving!

While loving your home, one brings care into where you live, and most likely grateful for what you have.

If the atmosphere in your home becomes boring and dull, it will be difficult to cultivate positive changes in your life. When neglecting your home and the blessings it has given you, you’ll end up neglecting yourself!

Choosing to leave familiar surrounds can tear people apart (literally), as we all can form strong emotional attachments to places we live in.  Learning to let go and move on requires you to take the happiest moments with you; this needs to be organized properly.

My own experience saying goodbye to a home in Niagara 12 years ago, was agony! I lived in a beautiful 5-bedroom home on a ravine lot, with all the perks I ever wanted! I swore I would die there! Fast forward, my husband had an ‘opportunity’ out west and we left, thinking we’d be back in two years. Here we are 12 years later, having sold that lovely house long ago, and anticipating another move. I wish I had known about the Art of Letting Go, years ago.

The ‘Art of Letting Go’  begins with saying thank you and goodbye to the walls that have kept you safe, warm, dry, prosperous, and more.

You may be the type that only needs a ‘last look, or a verbal thank you and good bye, or just take one more look. That is okay. But, if you feel torn or insecure, you may find closure by reading further:

Take the time to go into each room and remember the ‘good times’, so that you can take them with you. You may wish to pat the walls or doors and stroke the banister affectionately. When you are done, find a spot in the house where you feel a connection to the whole space. Expand your arms. Then gather the happy-home-energy into a big hug to surround yourself; wrapping up like a big blanket. Then, put those happy memories into your heart to take with you to your next chapter.

People that pine for their old life, or live in the past, haven’t made an effort to move forward into new opportunities and new experiences. They always tend to look back, when things were better, simpler or when others were still alive.

To experience growth, we need to keep learning, better ourselves, and that beings the need to keep moving. Life has a plan for each of us. We all have ‘things we need to do’, and often, fear tells us to go back, where things are safe.

Moving can be stressful, but it is not the end of the world:

  • Be grateful for the time in your home and the people that brought joy to the walls.
  • Trust that the next chapter will find fulfillment and joy.
  • Bring happy memories with you to plant in another space.
  • Be open to explore, test new waters, meet new people and find solutions to life’s idiosyncrasies.

A small step forward opens up challenges that can force up to step up and become a better person than before.

Whether you are moving by choice or by logic it can be a real tug on emotions to hang onto things just-in-case or let go.

While you are preparing your move, it might be time to look into your trunks or treasure boxes…

Once again, evaluate each item. Pretend they are re-qualifying for a position in your new space:

  • Is this item supporting me in my life?
  • Should I bring it with me?
  • IF so, why is the item hiding in a trunk or a drawer?
  • What is the REAL purpose of this item?

Life is one big learning experience. Once we stop learning and trying, we will stop growing.

You are in charge of your life. If YOU choose to surround yourself with items that are ‘past-due’, you’ll be living the same life, in a new space.

It is possible to break the cycle of limitations! A huge benefit of moving is to give you a fresh start, a clean slate and new opportunities to grow and see what is out there.

If you are choosing to relocate this year, take the occasion to embrace your move. There is more to see, and clear skies ahead.

Enjoy your journey,

Kathryn

Hi Kathryn!

First of all I love, loved all the ladies in the Group Sessions. I always looked forward to Thursdays to see everyone.

I was having to clear out a room filled with papers and materials, to sort, and then put them all away.
The idea of vacuuming, dusting and keeping things clean was HUGE.

Huge awareness of actually being able to sort, and then find everything again. This is a huge concern for all parts of my house; now I know.

My sewing room is functional now and i only moved one thin… Read more
