Practical Steps to Success #6: Avoid the Train Wreck

Let’s face it, our lives are busy. Without any effort, our sub-conscious picks up so much “extra stuff” to process. “Extra stuff” translates into stress. Too much stress can overload your brain.

Stress reduction is SO important, and it is not so easy; whether you are commuting, meeting friends or actually trying to work. Your brain is gathering information all the time! Often, juggling clients or projects can be like ‘changing tracks’ in your head; opening too many options. Even taking a break, settled in a spot where a busy door is pushing energy at you, the bus stops every few minutes, and you have personal issues pressing… you are probably not functioning properly. Your brain is on over-time. It is trying to ‘tune out’ some things, and ‘focus’ on other things.

A new term being used in reference to the brain is ‘band width’. If your brain is tied up processing things like; distractions, logistics, relationships issues, finances and also trying to ‘work’, it doesn’t have room for logic. The band width is preoccupied. Worrying and long term stressors can eat up ‘band width’ in your brain and you probably can’t make decisions, follow directions or even think properly. Consequently; a poor job performance.

Multiple stressors are processed all the time; these little, tiny niggles collect to form a massive gridlock! This can be compared to a train wreck; unravelled, discombobulated, out of focus, irritable and off the tracks. Do you ever wonder: How do some days get out of control?

You need to check in with yourself when you start sliding off track.

  1. What is the goal, right now? Work, finances, relationship, moving, etc.
  2. What is bugging me the most, right now? Hot, cold, hunger, breeze, noise, people, kids, etc.
  3. Or, what is distracting me, right now? Weather, girls, e-mail, coffee, etc.
  4. What can I do about these issues, right now? Change seats, eat something, delegate, go home, put on a sweater, talk with a mentor, etc.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4.

When you process the little stressors, the big stressors lighten up; you can begin to think logically and sequentially again. Your band width will be open for business and you will be back on track.

You can avoid the train wreck!
