Ask Kathryn About Care for Lucky Bamboo

Place where your plant can get light, but not blasting hot. Top up water every week or so.

Hi Kathryn,

When looking for resources in regards to saving lucky bamboo, I came across your article here:https://www.kathrynwilking.com/ask-kathryn-lucky-bamboo-outgrows-container/. You were kind enough to include your email on the bottom.

I received two lucky bamboo stalks in May of 2018, one stalk started turning yellow a few months back and after some online research, I cut the stalk down hoping that new sprouts might come up. There are still some orange/white roots so I have been holding out hope that it could come back but I am afraid the stalk might be too short. Also, the roots are tangled with the other stalk in the photo as they were gifted to me in a small container. Do you have any suggestion on how I can revive the small stalk? In addition, do you believe its bad luck for a bamboo plant to die? I came across this article thats left me scrambling for any solution possible https://www.seattletimes.com/life/a-lucky-bamboo-plant-is-the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving-good-fortune-unless-you-kill-it/.

I have attached picturesof the bamboo below, thank you so much for your time and consideration, it is much appreciated.

Best, Liana

Liana sent me a pic of her bamboo plant.

HI Liana! Thanks for your note!

Poor bamboo! I’m so glad you are pro-active to care about these auspicious plants.

You are in luck! I have sure seen this before!

It has a condition called ‘rust’; quite common.– many are sold in small pots packed tight with crushed stones. Although bamboo is very hearty, like any plant, it needs oxygen and water.

This baby can be rinsed and washed gently in regular tap water. Think of cleaning the little roots as best you can. It is OKAY if a few roots get trimmed off. Even 50% cleaning will help but try for 85-90% without too much damage. (I know a gal who pulled ALL the roots off and started over –it lived.) The cut piece will recover too. If it stays entangled with the tall piece, that is still okay, or plant separately.

Once cleaned, trim off any yellow leaves. I suggest a glass container (you can see the water level better) with a few tumbled stones in to help hold up the stems. These plants will thrive and grow roots in these containers for years. Top up the water (change out once in a while) perhaps weekly.

Place this plant with natural light, but not too close to a south facing window –too hot!

Rinse the roots gently and clean off any rust particles.

IF you wish to plant in soil: wait until you get a healthy root ball and plant like a regular plant. Be sure it has good drainage. If the stalks get too tall, you can cut the stem in half and root in water again. A magical plant!

The bamboo is auspicious as  it is hearty and grows fast. Basically ‘nothing will break it down’. So, a healthy bamboo represents hearty, healthy and abundance!

Place on the left side of your desk and/or use in the kitchen to separate the fire-water issues you may have. (Stove-sink conflicts.)

Wash the stones in a colander.

This happens to many plants. In fact, I see the one in my kitchen also has this rust –so I need to get on that right away! This plant is in my kitchen, I have gold, purple and clear stones in the jar. Using a darker colored stone will hide what is going on in there. LOL! (good and bad)

Enjoy your bamboo and make a wish when you replant them.

Warmth, Kathryn

Replant: a layer of stones first, then place plant stalks holding them tall while gently drop in the remainder of stones. Vary heights for interest.
