Ask Kathryn
Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my office.
I work in Toronto at an administrative building close to the U of T. The buildings are old, old, old and sliced into skinny offices with high ceilings; think of the Harry Potter series with dark wood, heavy trim and windows up about 16 or 20’. My office is only 10-12 feet wide and about 30’ long with a window at the end.
I always think it is a mess and makes me feel rushed all the time. Any suggestions?
A: Thanks for your note and the pictures
Desks and offices can come in many different shapes and sizes. If something doesn’t feel right for you, chances are it isn’t right. You need to make a few adjustments. First of all, you need to find the command position.
The command position is when you have your back protected and you can see the door in your line of vision, with support on both sides.
Skinny as it is, rotate your desk to face the doorway, and move it to one side. It should be far enough away from the window to get some benefit from natural light, yet not feel you are in the middle of a fish bowl. Right away you should feel the difference. It may take two weeks before you get used to it, but this will change your life.
Place a special flower on your desk such as an orchid, peace lily or seasonal flowers. Even a quality silk plant will be perceived as ‘life and abundance’ to cheer up the place.
And, check the images left on walls from past occupants. It may be time to replace them with images you need for yourself. Take the time to consider which images will support you best. Also, plan a day to deal with some of the paper clutter.
With these few little changes you should feel ‘better’ going into work and be more productive. A major clean-up and clearing will help give you a fresh start and get back on track.
Good luck with the transformation.~ Kathryn
