Q: What does feng shui say about ripped jeans and distressed clothing? Why does it seem that people are ‘dressing down’ in order to ‘dress up’? Does this make any sense? Thanks.
A: Yes, it is interesting how the fashion industry can justify anything as long as they have an audience.
People are drawn to drama; bad boys and extremism run high in the fashion world. In order to be ‘progressive’ the designers need to grab your attention. Years ago, do you remember the fashion statement that looked like your pants were falling down? Actually, that ‘fashion statement’ was taken from prisoners. People in prison were not allowed belts, and therefore, had the appearance of their pants riding lower than usual. There was a large demographic that embraced this ‘relaxed style’, and may not be aware where it originated.
In feng shui, torn or distressed clothing (even intentionally ripped jeans) attracts a low quality of energy. To advertise or ‘attract’ poor or poverty chi-energy can also gather ill-fortune. Unflattering clothes or poorly fitting clothing can have the same effect. If the clothes you are wearing make you feel inferior, or cause you to feel depressed and uncomfortable, they will not properly support your personal chi-energy. Be true to yourself: when you get up each morning, wash and dress like you care about yourself. Make an effort to be the ‘best you can be’ and give the fashion police something new to talk about…such as cultivating positive chi!
