Ask Kathryn about “Lucky Bamboo”

What Do You Do When “Lucky Bamboo” Outgrows Its Container?

Can you replant it, or do you just throw it away? And if you throw it away, will it bring bad luck?

I explain in this audio clip:

Q: What happens to “lucky bamboo” when it outgrows the container? Do I throw it out? What happens if you throw out “lucky bamboo”? Is that bad luck?

A: If you have a very dead or dying plant it can’t be enhancing an area for you anymore, right? Like any “cure” or “enhancement” you place in an area, sometimes they just run their course. It is okay to say goodbye to your dead plant and it will come back via the compost heap.

Specifically, the “lucky bamboo” are often arranged in tight quarters with little, decorative stones. Eventually these roots will grow, twist around the stones, and when it gets too tight for the container, begin to die.

You can lift your plant out of its container, shake off as many stones as possible, and replant in regular planting soil. Many “lucky bamboo” sold are actually dracaena, a hearty household plant. You may need to support the stocks until they take hold.

One client of mine was stressed that she couldn’t get her “lucky bamboo” plant out of the bulbous glass container; she drove it over to my house to show me! She expressed no attachment to the vase, so, I placed the entire plant in a paper bag and struck it on the driveway. BAM! Problem solved.

We replanted her “lucky bamboo” successfully.
