Avoiding the Valentine Syndrome

Avoiding the Valentine Syndrome

Okay, it is almost here again this year: Valentine’s Day. This day is almost guaranteed to bring mental anguish to a confident, productive executive.  So, what is this all about?

It is supposed to be, a declaration or validation of love between two people. And, the media tells us we need to be running around looking for the perfect gift! The hype is often over-the-top and unrealistic for regular couples. So, why is this concept difficult to sort out and uncomfortable as Feb 14th rolls around every year?

Shed the media pressure cooker. Here are a few ideas that you–as a couple, can appreciate each other without buying into the frenzy? No need to wait for a special day.

  • Start your day with a snuggle and a coffee. The first one up gets to make the coffee and bring it back to bed.
  • Saying, ‘I love you!’, only takes a few minutes. Next time you wash down your bike; clean both bikes at the same time. Consideration, along with those ‘three little words’ will go a bit further.
  • Walk the dog together. So often this chore gets segregated –one does the morning walk and the other does the evening walk. A walk together to share the day’s events: bonus.
  • Take turns planning events, without judgement. Whether it is a day trip, a weekend away or date night, take the pressure off yourself –let the other party have a turn to show you another perspective.
  • Starting thinking in “two’s”. When you are buying something, buy two. Two, special wine glasses. Two candles. Two knick knacks, matching mugs or a picture with two birds featured. You get it. It is imperative to think in two’s. A good habit is to consider your mate and your commitment, when making purchases that can affect the both of you.
  • At any time, you can say ‘I Love You’. We all like to hear reinforcements.

We need Valentine’s Day, if only to give us a kick in the pants. It gently reminds us to pay attention to that very special someone in our lives. Have a great day!

Hi Kathryn!

First of all I love, loved all the ladies in the Group Sessions. I always looked forward to Thursdays to see everyone.

I was having to clear out a room filled with papers and materials, to sort, and then put them all away.
The idea of vacuuming, dusting and keeping things clean was HUGE.

Huge awareness of actually being able to sort, and then find everything again. This is a huge concern for all parts of my house; now I know.

My sewing room is functional now and i only moved one thin… Read more
