Be In Your Element

Wow! Have you recently experienced a ‘win’ where you just felt that everything came together perfectly? Was it an AH-HA moment? Or more like a comfortable, soothing peace that washed over you?

On our journey through the Five Elements, we’ve discovered an amazing correlation between basic earth properties and people’s personalities. We all naturally gravitate towards our comfort zone, where our natural talents lie and thing are easy for us.  When you find yourself confident, fulfilled, productive, energized and generally happy in a situation; take note. You’re in your element, and that is where you need to be. By identifying your strengths and weaknesses in various areas, you can work toward a balance to be in your element. The results can be extremely rewarding.

Each element can support another in a specific cycle. We can also spot these influences with our friends and colleagues. Check out this Productive and Nurturing Cycle:

Wood feeds the Fire:  It is no mystery that one requires wood to make a fire. Wood-people are extroverts and creators of new concepts and ideas. Symbolically, they feed their ideas into the fire zone (marketing, sales and planners) to get executed and can eventually be consumed.

Fire burns out and forms Earth: When fire burns down it makes ash. The earth takes in all these bits of dirt, soil, sand and clay to form a solid foundation. A firm nurturing base is needed for stability and consistency for firm groundwork. An earth-person will make sure everyone is included and nurture their abilities to grow.

Earth compresses and forms Metal: As the earth compresses, there is a transformation of materials, establishing rigidity and strength. The nurturing cycle can form granite, and minerals for other uses. A metal-person can have a rigid personality; disciplined and articulate in their projects and tasks.

Metal contains and holds Water: A natural property, with man-made forging, produces a product to move our most precious element; water. Through the taps of our homes and the abundance in our tubs and pools, water is a constant for life. Water-people enjoy their still, quiet lives (think of deep water), contemplate life and ponder the issues of the day.

Water nourishes Wood: Water, when contained and controlled has a purpose. By nurturing wood, trees and vegetation to grow, we have a food supply and life source. Water-people are seasoned professionals, have an abundance of knowledge from their experiences and can often articulate this wisdom back into the community. Water, when depressed can become stale and stagnant -signalling depression and lack of growth.

Regardless of our dominant element, we can integrate the different characteristics of other elements in different social situations and tasks. Becoming a well-rounded person is an asset in order to get along with everyone in your home, neighbourhood and office.
