A Boost for the Heart of Your Home

Let’s face it; the weather has changed!

Where to turn and what to do, to strengthen our bodies against germs and virus’ for the season?

In feng shui, the Health Area is located in the center of your entire house, and each room. Now that you are aware of this auspicious area, it makes sense to try and take care of this space. A person’s health is the central force for life.

In some homes, access to this Health Area can be blocked due to its position in the home, or it may be blocked due to neglect.

You may recall the Bagua chart of the Nine Areas of Life; showing you the grid to locate these areas. This grid will reveal the health location; it could be in a storage area, garbage or sharing space with the furnace and pipes!

As I’ve explained before, the BTB Bagua is flexible to our modern, progressive society and often, the lines don’t line up (literally). When access to this area is for utilities or storage, the Health Area defaults over to the kitchen, where we nourish and replenish our bodies.

There are many ways to boost the Health Area in your home. Start by omitting electronics, computers and microwaves from any counters or desks. Then, designate an area to hold positive, healthy things such as a fruit bowl, homemade granola, fresh flowers, cook books, fitness magazines and more. Even colorful images of fruits, a vineyard or what relates to you as ‘health’. Each home is laid out differently; therefore, you’ll need to get creative.

Stairwells are often in the center of the home; and steps can be an accident-prone area. Be sure to check for loose carpeting or rocking handrails on a regular basis. Do not use the color red to paint your steps or the walls in a stairwell.

Many times, I suggest a small display representing each of the Five Elements to help balance this health area. The Health Area is the nucleus of our lives; choosing one item to representation each element can reinforce balance. You can select a colour, shape or image to use, or mix them up. Here is a short reminder of the Five Elements and their traits: https://www.kathrynwilking.com/resources

Wood= life and action in general: green things, tall-column type items, plants, wood carvings or wood items.
Fire= passion and attention: red things, triangular or sharp objects, candles, bright lights and fire.
Earth= grounding and solid: earth-tone colours, squares or rectangles (equality-balance) and soil, clay or stones.
Metal= precision: white or grey items, circular things, mirrors, glass and actual metals.
Water= calmness: dark blue or black, wavy lines, pictures of calm water or actual water in fountains, fish bowl or a vase.

Getting creative doesn’t need to be stressful. A small plant includes most of the elements: a round pot (metal) that is made from clay or ceramic (earth), filled with earth (more earth), with a small plant (wood) and watered (water), takes care of most of the elements. The fire element can be added by either choosing a red pot, red leaves/flowers/berries on the plant or even add a small red bow to the mix.

If you are not able to tend to a plant, fill the bowl or vase (metal) with stones (earth). If the stones are tumbled, they represent water. Set a tea light on top (fire) and then add your green life (wood) in the form of a silk plant for height.

More thinking is required to “cure” a house design that place pipes, elevators and staircases up this central part of a building. This makes sense during construction, to access the logistic needs of the home, but this isn’t necessarily the best feng shui.

Too much activity in the central part of the house can bring overactive-chi. Too much chi-activity here can weaken our resistance. Therefore, if the chi-energy flow doesn’t allow us a restful and calm living environment, our bodies can feel weak, agitated and susceptible to breakdown. Think of having your lungs stifled! If your health area isn’t healthy, chances are, you need to have options to boost this area. This is where we need to be creative!

Some common “cures” to consider:

Lead crystals can distribute light energy through the area. Their round-shape can disperse active-chi through their multi-faceted surface, as well as, they can ‘find’ light and bring it into a quiet area.
Colour cures are utilized through tangible items such as coffee cups, notebooks and pens, dishes, pictures on the walls and specific paint colours. I’ve seen stairs with actual paint samples of the five element colours leading progressively up the stairs! (My friend Margie sent me her staircase with this colour cure!)
• Another option, one client purchased five colored crystals to raise the chi-energy of the narrow staircase in her house. She placed them on the underside of the steps.
• Other options: set up a display of items to represent ‘good health’ at the bottom of the stairwell and/or in your Health Area.

Your health is important in order for you to rest, recover and to make sound decisions during the day. Creativity is encouraged by using the things you love; therefore, try to use items that you already have in your home.

Awareness is the key to any “feng shui” cure. Take some time this afternoon to check out the health, of your Health Area. This space may require a feng shui boost to keep you strong – enough to battle any surprises coming ahead!

I have a few more questions (after the Home Harmony visit) about things but I’ll start off with an update. I am feeling very good and my space feels very good and fresh as well. I am loving the new layout with my desk and I just got rid of one of my chairs yesterday. The new spaces for the art feels right. I’ve decluttered the area behind my desk, and I’ve made a few beautiful little touch-ups in my bedroom to hopefully attract some more wealth! No further on the job search because I’m j… Read more
