Bumps In The Night: Handling Sleep Disruption

Sleep disruption can come from all angles.

It’s after mid-night and you’re wide awake, again! What happened this time? Our bodies fall asleep, but much of the brain sub-conscious, is still awake – protecting us from saber-tooth tigers and monsters under the bed!

It is how we are conditioned.

Yet, this seems rather extreme; considering I woke up because of a toothbrush the other night!  Really!

When our ‘sleep mode’ shifts through deep sleep and its rhythms, the sub-conscious picks up all kinds of information; and tries to warn us. (This triggers the fight-or-flight scenario from ancestors, from WAY back.)

The other night when I rolled over, my sub-conscious alerted me to wake up.

WAKE UP!

Startled, I noticed that someone left a light on in the master bathroom. ‘What the heck’? I blamed my husband, of course.

When I went into the bathroom, it wasn’t just a light on; it was my husbands toothbrush charging!

His fancy toothbrush had a charge light. While it had never bothered us before, that night it was strategically placed to reflect into a huge mirror, which in turn, lit up the whole bathroom!

How many of you have woken up because of a toothbrush?

Sleep is the most important thing we can do for ourselves. With enough sleep, we can actually de-stress, listen to another point of view and make sound decisions for change. As our modern society seems to be awake around the globe, 24/7, sleep is not on many priority lists.

There are SO MANY accounts about people ‘flying off the handle’ or ‘exploding from stress’. Social media is FULL of advice about mindfulness and meditation….and yet, one of the major causes of angry behavior is sleep deprivation. It’s all about choices.

**Could it be possible, with enough sleep, we can witness the elimination of violence, rage and destructive actions? Interesting to consider….

Anytime, we can reduce the amount of unsafe exposure throughout the day, makes a difference to our disposition, mental health and sleep rhythms.

I hard-wired my computer with an Ethernet cable in order to cut down on the EMF (Electro-magnetic fields) energy in my office. I’m also hard-wired directly to my printer (a Wi-Fi connection only when I need it.) but I do use a wireless mouse for convenience. And, I take regular breaks from my computer on my ‘desk days’.

We all make choices.

EMF’s are only one thing, but there is SO MUCH MORE! Let’s look specifically at what distractions are in your bedroom?

When there are a lot of hard surfaces in your bedroom (mirrors, glass doors, windows without shades, T.V.’s and even glossy furniture), lights can reflect off these surfaces and bounce all over in the dark.

Your bedroom ‘should’ be a safe haven for rest, but many need a detective (such as yourself) to sort it out.

  • Check all systems for lights on power bars, cables boxes, and notification settings. Unplug what you can and stash your charging phone in a drawer at least 3 feet away (1 meter). Throw a towel over the TV. Move your ‘night light’ around the corner.
  • Install proper blinds or drapes to keep out street lamps, car lights and even moonlight on clear evenings.
  • Remove giant mirrors and glass surfaces. These reflective surfaces bounce off each other, and bounce again.
  • Ensure your bed is safe. Check for metals in bed frames, headboards and springs that could be a conduit for vibrations.
  • Close the door to adjoining rooms/bathrooms. Whatever is charging in there should not affect your sleep. Watch out for smart tooth brushes (!)

Don’t we owe it to ourselves to look after our bodies, feel more energetic, and be able to make sound, compassionate decisions in life? Make time to have a sound sleep.

When you reach the point of de-stress, you can give a smile to someone else along the way. YOU are in charge of your own special journey!

Enjoy the day, after a great nights sleep,
