Decision Making: Back to Basics

The pros and the cons!

Decisions happen every day. Some are so small and mundane we hardly have to think twice.

The others? Those decisions can have ‘life-altering’ consequences and should be made more carefully.

Just recently, I was asked to do a guest article for a magazine! Great! The topic was interesting, but there was a dilemma: Should I make it more personal, or should I stick to the research-based facts?

~ A non-life-threatening decision… but what do the readers want to read? How will this affect my career? And, with enough interest: is there a possible follow-up article for me?

I went back to the basics. With a short three-day deadline, I had to get started.

The scratch pad came out with my coffee cup. I used the exact same method I used to solve a life-altering decision about my first full-time job: should I stay or should I go. Write it all down:

  • List three pros and cons for each concept. I suggest only three, so you’ll stay on topic.
  • Circle the items that grab you right-away! Pros or cons: green light or roadblock?
  • Contemplate the fall-out, if any, with each scenario.
  • Make a decision and don’t look back.

Often, both scenarios could turn out okay, just different. You may end up working on both projects along the way, but the timing might be better for one rather than another. In my dilemma, the time frame was too tight to arrange and meet with someone; I defaulted to do the story with just the facts.

Making a choice, and following through with it, displays confidence and leadership qualities. A few minutes of quiet time that could help advance your career or feed your reputation is well worth it.

“When a decision could go either way, you still have to decide which way to go.”

Kathryn is very much a professional, I’ve known her for a number of years and from the start have tried to make changes to my home and office based on her suggestions, recommendations and the Feng Shui principles she teaches.

I asked her to come over for a quick walk-about after we experienced a break in.  A number of issues came up, fortunately none had anything to do with the break in.  She discovered my home office was of particularity full of negative energy which is why for years I’ve had a… Read more
