Finding the right fit for a new job can have its upsets. Were you hired to ‘make change’ or hired to replace someone who has moved on? Or, both?
Setting up a new office with the proper things to support your position includes selecting a chair and desk that is right for you. Yes, it is a BIG DEAL! If you are making-do ‘for now’, you will not be able to reach your full potential!

~ Janet*called me months previously to help with her promotion. She was already focused to move up the ladder, and was excited to add a feng shui boost to her efforts. (Taking Command)
Janet was given a promotion in a large insurance firm*; an office on the 10th floor with the big boys! The glitch was: her ‘assigned team’ was on the 5th floor, a long way away. Protocol for this Supervisory position was to hang out with Upper Management, and also be available for her team.
Eager to help, Janet wanted to be actively involved with the day-to-day issues of her team. So, she went down to the 5th floor each day to infiltrate with her group. She initiated a make-shift space to meet and set up a table and chair, cleverly tucked in behind the printer. This spot made her available to her people.
When I followed up regarding her promotion, we ended up discussing her routine, particularly her chair. ‘Oh, it doesn’t matter’, she said to me. “It’s only to connect with my team, not to pay bills and such.’
The issue: Janet deserves a proper chair, desk and work area.
AND, she needs to give the message that she is not a co-worker,
but the boss.
Eventually, the murmurings began, as expected: The upper management wondered why she wasn’t at her desk on the 10th floor, and her team wondered why she was meddling in the day-to-day routines. A little discouraged, Janet began to wonder; couldn’t they see how hard she was working?
Was it possible to have two work stations at one job location?
Eventually, the truth comes out: The office upstairs on the 10th floor, was intimidating to Janet. She inherited some fine furniture, a heavy upholstered chair, and had an office with a door. But, she didn’t fit into the intended role.
Downstairs, she was important: There was a lot of activity, and she was involved in the pulse of sales and activities. She preferred her makeshift work area behind the printer, than the upholstered office upstairs.
Ask yourself: Does the office behind the printer support Janet,
her promotion,
her authority, and her goals with the company?
Feng Shui talks about ‘being in charge’, or ‘being in command’. Learning how to choose your chair and desk, where to place them, and how to control the energy around the task is very important. One needs proper supports in a space -in order to cultivate opportunities, productivity and strategy.
Janet had none of these supports in place, at either work area. Something had to change in order for things to flow better in the office.
Janet finally agreed that the desk area she chose was not suitable for her position, and yet was adamant she needed to be with her team. She decided to request a proper workspace on the 5th floor and a suitable chair; a chair that was the right size and offered support for her back and arms.
Finally, within a week, Janet settled into her new work area. With a new chair and desk chosen specifically for her she can fulfill the duties in her new role.
Her new office is still in the hive of activity, yet has portable walls for privacy. Janet can talk about problem-solving issues without distractions and noise from the printer. Anyone on the team can discuss issues with her, while not on display in front of others. And, she is still available to attend the 10th floor meetings when required. Everyone wins! ~
As women, many times we settle for what is easy, or what doesn’t ruffle the crowd. In the long-haul, it is the one that doesn’t speak up that can be over-looked. Settling for an ill-fitting chair (or someone’s cast-off) to work day-after-day is not beneficial to help you move forward. If you are going to use someone else’s stuff, make sure there is good energy coming forward.
Speak up and position yourself for success. You deserve the best in order to make change.
Making change in a new position is often the only time things will get changed!
Only the best,
