The Hummingbirds have been most active lately! They are feeding constantly right now to get ready for their long migration. Because of their small size and high degree of activity, they lose body heat rather quickly, and need to digest their food quickly. They will eat for several days straight, storing up food and energy in their tiny bodies ready to make the long journey. I’ve seen them out almost every morning this week!
Did you know there are over 300 species? One type, the ruby-throated hummingbird has been known to journey for 2,500 miles; from Alaska to Central America! Neither Scientist’s nor avian specialists can figure out how these little birds store up enough energy to accomplish the task! Apparently they have learned to (almost) hibernate at night in order to conserve their resources, on a regular basis. But, how do they go from eating constantly, to being in flight for several days, or weeks? Could they just hang out in the jet stream and glide to South America?
In native folklore, they are very auspicious. The hummingbird has the ability to move its wings in a figure 8 pattern; a symbol for infinity. This little bird also has links to the past, future and the laws of cause and effect.
According to the book Animal Speak, by Ted Andrews, ‘…if you spot a hummingbird in your yard, it is a symbol for accomplishing that which seems impossible. It will teach you how to find the miracle of joyful living from your own life circumstances.’
Nice. I can’t wait!
P.S. Sorry, I couldn’t get a photo of the little guy… had to rely on clip art.
