Take the quiz nowIcebergs in June! WOW!
I am fortunate to have good friends to visit just north of St. John’s in Newfoundland. The icebergs put on a fantastic presence in the North Atlantic this year!
Did you know that it takes three years for an iceberg to travel from Greenland to Newfoundland? I had no idea! We initially took a car ride up to Bonavista to look for icebergs and puffins. Then, a few days later, realized the ‘bergs we saw off the coast in St. John’s harbour had grounded; meaning they were stuck on the sea bed more than 200’ down. WOW, again! An opportunity to get closer!
The boat tours that normally take people out for Whale Watching were all out looking at icebergs. So, off we went! What an experience! The icebergs seemed to be glowing on the horizon and were so easy to find. (Much easier than finding whales, for sure!) They were melting at an amazing rate in the 20C temperature.
Seriously, I’m still speechless! These pictures only give you a sample of the massive blocks of ice moving through the North Atlantic. The exposed parts, possibly four stories tall, are only 10% of the iceberg’s actual size. One, far away on the horizon, was estimated at half a kilometer long!
Icebergs can also be pretty dangerous if you try to get too close. When a chunk breaks off the main ‘berg, it starts to roll to re-stabilize itself. This is called ‘calving’; somewhat like giving birth to the small ones. Be careful!
My visit to view whales and icebergs in Newfoundland was long-anticipated. The experience shows me that some life-goals, as much as I want them, need to be shelved until the timing is right.
The timing, this year, was just perfect!
