Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…

A well-placed mirror can bring in light and life.

A well-placed mirror can bring in light and life.

Yes, mirrors are used in feng shui, and it can be a mystery where they fit in. …mirrors have a big part to play if they are used correctly.

Mirrors can be the ‘window to the soul’, but what are they actually reflecting? The magic lies in the application. Many people don’t know what to do with a large mirror and it ends up slapped onto a walk reflecting a ceiling fan. YIKES!

A properly placed mirror has the ability to stretch a room, hide flaws in architecture and make walls and pillars appear to be invisible. Pay attention to what you are reflecting in the mirror.

Let’s look at possible intentions of using different mirrors:

  • Bring in the Light: (pic 1)to liven up a dark area, perhaps on the north side of the home or office, a large horizontal mirror can to bring in sunlight. The mirror needs to be hung high enough to catch the sun’s rays and to clear any chairs, or obstacles in its way.

Too low, and it will reflect people eating, or clutter in the living room. If it is too high, you will only catch the reflection draperies, ceiling lights and security systems.

  • Hide architectural challenges: (pic 2)Use a mirror to ‘correct‘ an area. This photo of a small hallway in the back hosts a plethora of utilities: a two-piece washroom, clothes closet, electrical panel, and the hot water tank. The use of this large oval mirror breaks up the square-in-square definition of the hallway. A mirror hung on the washroom door like this should do two things: first, it pulls the doorway forwards, so you don’t recognize this as a utility hall. Second, energetically closes off the flushing energy from the toilet and plumbing.

There is a problem here thou, it the mirror is reflecting all the shoes and clutter stuck at the back door. Now this family has twice as much visual clutter to deal with! Check to see what your mirror reflecting; time to deal with the clutter.

  • See around corners: (pic 3) A third type is a convex mirror that can help you see around corners. This small mirror, purchased at the local hardware store is just enough to see if anyone is coming down the walk. In high density areas, this type of home is only two steps from the walkway and is a hazard waiting to happen. The small convex mirror gives the home owner s a ‘head’s up’ before stepping out the door.

  • Rear view in small spaces: Smaller, flat or convex mirrors can be used in any situation where your visibility is confined. Think of these additions as a ‘rear view mirror’, giving you insight to shadows and activities behind you at your desk, cooking at the stove or working in the dining room.

  • Visibility X 2: Some large, giant mirrors are hung outside on stucco or wood siding. They do give the warning about traffic on the walkway and reflect your door to twice its size! If you have people unable to find your door, a large mirror could also improve the ‘helpful people’ section in your home.

Mirrors should not be purchased because they are ‘good feng shui’. A mirror should be purchased with intention to do the right job.

Remember to look at what they are actually reflecting; you want to reflect and encourage the good, and deflect the bad.

All the best,

Kathryn

FYI: A note here about ceiling fans. Most feng shui consultants do not recommend or use ceiling fans particularly in bedrooms. These fans can move a lot of air and tend to be too breezy for a good night’s sleep. Many of these come in heavy, dark finishes, (which may match the furniture) but it is not recommended that you sleep under anything heavy such as a beam, book shelves or the like, let alone a moving object.   When a mirror picks up this image, you have two fans overhead!

Hi Kathryn!

First of all I love, loved all the ladies in the Group Sessions. I always looked forward to Thursdays to see everyone.

I was having to clear out a room filled with papers and materials, to sort, and then put them all away.
The idea of vacuuming, dusting and keeping things clean was HUGE.

Huge awareness of actually being able to sort, and then find everything again. This is a huge concern for all parts of my house; now I know.

My sewing room is functional now and i only moved one thin… Read more
