To See the Icebergs!
WOW!
I was fortunate enough to complete my mission to visit the far east coast of Canada this June!
The conflict for me has always been how to merge my business goals with my personal goals; or should they be treated equally?
I love to travel and one of my goals is to see Canada, (my home and native land) from coast to coast to coast…to coast! It is a BIG PLACE! When setting any goal, planning is everything; who, what, where, when and why is the typical rational. Whenever I can’t explain my radical behaviour to my spouse, I need to look deep for the answers to these questions. Often, ‘why’ is the toughest one to answer! (Because… it is THERE!)
Stay on track with some of the things you want to do in life. Review these goals every once in a while and seek opportunities to go after these urges. A niggle to get moving is all you need to book that ticket for a life changing experience.
~ I am fortunate to have good friends to visit just north of St. John’s in Newfoundland. The icebergs put on a fantastic presence in the North Atlantic this year!
Did you know that it takes three years for an iceberg to travel from Greenland to Newfoundland? I had no idea!
We initially took a car ride up to Bonavista to look for icebergs and puffins. Then, a few days later, we realized the ‘bergs we saw off the coast in St. John’s harbour had grounded; meaning they were stuck on the sea bed more than 200’ down. WOW, again! An opportunity to get closer!
The boat tours that normally take people out for Whale Watching were all out looking at icebergs. So, off we went! What an experience! The icebergs seemed to be glowing on the horizon and were so easy to find. (Much easier than finding whales, for sure!) They were melting at an amazing rate in the 20C temperature.
Seriously, I’m still speechless! These pictures only give you a sample of the massive blocks of ice moving through the North Atlantic. The exposed parts, possibly four stories tall, are only 10% of the iceberg’s actual size. One, far away on the horizon was estimated at half a kilometer long!
Icebergs can also be pretty dangerous if you try to get too close. When a chunk breaks off the main ‘berg, it starts to roll to re-stabilize itself. This is called ‘calving’; somewhat like giving birth to the small ones.
This visit to view whales and icebergs in Newfoundland was long-anticipated for me. The experience shows me that some life-goals, as much as I want them, need to be shelved until the timing is right.
The timing, this year, was just perfect!
This iceberg was grounded outside of St. John’s harbour in Newfoundland.
