Practical Steps for Success #1 : Choosing a desk area

In order to maintain control and make sound decisions, you need to support your working world. Interesting enough, more and more people have ‘portable work stations’ and claim they can work anywhere. Good for them! I agree. This flexible life style is wonderful.

To debate this: when you need to complete a project or work on a big presentation, you may have to look harder to find the best place to work. In order to choose a seat and a work station, you may want to consider the following:

  • If your work area is sturdy, it will give you support.
  • If your work area is large, you will feel confident and competent.
  • If a desk is owned by a successful person who you respect, good feelings will bring good benefits. (Ask before you borrow the desk.)
  • If a desk is previously owned and up for grabs, be sure the type of work at the desk has always been productive and in good faith.

A desk is a powerful tool! Any weak structure will reflect a weak self-esteem. This includes anything wobbly, propped up and even glass tables. If you are working on-the-run, take the time to remove food residue and clear the area.  Allow yourself to have some elbow room and turn your back on distractions. Great ideas and great work come from having room to bring in great ideas!

Only you can decide how and where to do your work. A solid, sturdy work area is the goal for encouraging productive work. Optimistically, when the deadline is fast approaching -make the best choice you can!
