Practical Steps to Success # 19: Twenty One Days to Change a Habit?
Why? Why? Why? Why is it SO HARD to change a few little things? Either to try something new or adapt a new habit…
Is it really mind-over-matter? Or, is something else going on?
The cliché, Twenty One Days to Change a Habit is true, but it is not what you think. It is the brain and the muscles that can be self-sabotaging! They are the ones (in the sub-conscious mind) telling the rest of the body;
“Whoa! Slow down! That’s not the way we’ve done this before!”
Our brains
can sabotage
our best efforts!
And, that is why it takes SO LONG to form a new habit. Your sub-conscious memory is trying to maintain a constant normality. And, resist any changes.
But then again, if motivation and self-discipline are there; what is the problem?
Your brain has a prewired routine that often goes into an auto-pilot sequence, in order to get the task done. So, when you are ready for change, the task falls into the conscious mind to make changes. We are so easily distracted! No wonder it takes SO LONG to see results.

Whether you need change your fitness routine, eating habits, raise your sales goals or just change the day you take out the garbage, you DO need to work at it. You need to consciously set intentions for change and put out the effort, in order to experience the change.
When making any adjustments with your habits, I suggest making a note on the calendar to track your progress. Anytime you feel weak or discouraged with these new goals, proceed with a reality check. HOW LONG have you been trying to make change? If it has been less than twenty-one days, there is no need for the self-defeating attitude.
