Practical Steps to Success #5: The Vision

Practical Steps for Success # 5: The Vision

When you were younger, did you ever wonder about the future? Did you ever figure that you would end up where you are now? Some kids knew exactly what they wanted to be. And others just fell into the work force.

Many people, including me, had to find a back-up plan more than once. It is never too late to plan.

Have you heard of a Vision Board? It is a tangible tool to put your goals and interests, in an organized way, for you (and others) to see ahead.

In the Office, this could be a spread sheet or sales projections. In your household, this could be in the form of a Maintenance List. But often, the personal goals do not get addressed. Ask yourself: What do I want to do with my life?

If you are gainfully employed, and secure for now, do not jeopardize your job. Let’s just add to this asset. Is it more time you need? Or, more money? Are you ready to save for a fill in the blank? Do you wish to take a class or pursue a hobby? Start to brain-storm and get it all on paper. You are not getting any younger. (Sorry about that.)

When I hit the 5-0 mark, I had a desire to rearrange my goals. I realized that a few things on ‘my list’ were not going to happen. And, that is okay. Other things have come along and filled the gap. My point is: stop beating yourself up.

Go for the stuff you want,

and chuck the stuff you don’t need anymore!

Whether the things you need and want are material or emotional. Whether you need to save up for an item or sell off other items, write them all down.

  1. Start your vision board by using any piece of paper.
  2. Insert pictures of the items related to your goals for next year, or over the next five years. Put these on your screen-saver or pin on the wall.
  3. Find articles or quotes to support these goals. Keeping these goals ‘in sight’ will help keep these goals attainable. (review when needed)
  4. Seek out the right financial planner/teacher/committee to help you organize and start the lifestyle you want.

We all need direction and we all need to plan for something. Just having a small goal can help us focus, boost morale and enjoy life to the fullest.
