We found a wasp nest in our entranceway.
When we moved into a new space last August, there were wasps hanging around the front entrance to our home.
We had numerous movers, contractors and helpers coming in and out, all mentioning the ‘bees out front’. It would appear that they were crawling in under the facia boards over the entranceway.
I had a talk with these wasps, it went something like this:
“Hey guys, it’s is not acceptable for you to be hanging around at the front door. Many humans are afraid of you. You can stay here for a while. Yet, I must tell you that IF any of you sting anyone coming in or out of my home, we’ll have to take serious measures to smoke you out and you’ll likely die; you and your babies.
Sorry, but it’s the truth.
SO, think about it”.
Interesting enough, not one person was stung. The wasps stayed through all the moving in and out, rain and shine.
When the shorter days arrived last fall and the temperatures dropped, I had another talk with the wasps.
“Thank you for not stinging me or anyone that came to the house. Yet, I do have to tell you that, you have to move. You’ll have to find another place to live.
Very soon it’ll be too cold for you to fly and you’ll go into hibernation. I know this.
Here’s the nest sharing space with insulation.
SO, if you haven’t moved your nesting space before spring, I‘ll take charge and move you along. I’ll take your whole nest down while you are hibernating and set you into a new space. I’ll try to be careful. I have no idea where to take you, but you really do need to move and we will fix the area under the entranceway. So think about it. “
This past week, I hired contractors before the temperature got too warm; the wasps should still be asleep.
I was armed with a plastic bag for the nest, my mosquito hat and gloves for protection. I was ready to take them down the street and into the wooded area.
When the contractors opened the facia and found the nest, it was much smaller than I thought. And, there weren’t any wasps to be found!
Really? We should look again, rip out another panel!
Apparently, bees and wasps leave fermions behind when they move… another bevy of wasps will feel safe to move in. We used a bit of vinegar spray, and replaced the vinyl panels with cedarwood.
Did they hear me? Or, did the wasps figure this out for themselves? I’d like to think that I DID save the wasps.
Enjoy the journey, Kathryn
New cedar fascia and a chance to revamp the front entrance. Thank you guys.
