Take the quiz now‘Spindle City’ is the nick-name I gave to my new cottage-home.
Yep, a solid, 1982 two-story home with tons of room for my stuff -and spindles on every floor! There are oak spindles everywhere: the porch, two decks, a dock, a two-story staircase, a cat-walk overhead and all around a sunken living room!
We were hunting for the ‘right place’ for almost 2 years; what we found was that newer homes had smaller properties. Years ago when ‘they’ were slicing and dicing up property, the slices were more generous on prime locations. To get a large, semi-rural property we were looking for, the buildings would be older.
Why did we buy this place? Well, it has quite a few perks: it is on Lake Simcoe, a small boat house and double car garage for Stephen. As well, this house has enough ‘swinging room’ for me, my pups and all my decorating/feng shui stuff!
While waiting for the moving truck, we decided it was the perfect time to tear out the ‘playpen spindles’ around the living room.
The spindles weren’t too difficult to remove; there is a trick to dig out the patch hiding the nails that were holding it together. You can see the transformation immediately!
Feng Shui works just like this: study the situation, figure what is not-right and brain-storm how to make it work. Sometimes, a little colour therapy works wonders. Other times, the change is a little subtler, such as hanging the right image in the right place.
And then, there is the (aggressive) demolition phase: just move something!
(Thanks to my hubby and his tools!)
Settling into Spindle City requires a bit more time than we planned. It is empowering searching for the right lights, drapes, and colours to surround ourselves; the motions of settling into our new home.
As we move around the rooms, discussing ideas and options to improve flow, my husband and I are still faced with an enormous amount of spindles to deal with.
The name ‘Spindle City’ may stick around as we swap out turned-oak spindles for glass or metal options, inside and outside. LOL!
What would we do without little projects that help define who we are, and what we are all about? – Moving forwards.
I wish you to find the ‘best place on earth’, for you!
Warmth, Kathryn
