The Water Mark

This is one river where salmon come to spawn. I guess they won't be back.

This is one river where salmon come to spawn. I guess they won’t be back.

I wanted to write about something cheery….but I have to get a different message out today.

Water can be seen as a light mist settled on the most delicate flower or it can be most powerful by taking out homes and over turn boats in a storm.

Water is one of our greatest resources, yet it is the most unstable.

Water, specifically fresh water, is crucial for our lives, growing food and nurturing our planet. Yet, there is so much waste in our progressive world. Waste from all of us accustomed to having everything clean and spotless…and plentiful.

We’ve had issues in British Columbia with lack of rainfall and a smaller snow pack than usual. For the first time EVER, citizens are being asked to conserve. I’m happy about the crackdown as, here in Vancouver, the city does not regulate water consumption!!! No kidding! When I first moved to town in 2006, I was disgusted with the waste of water. (Many property owners would put their sprinklers on daily timers for their 4×8 sq foot of lawn ~and they would be watering in the rain. Don’t get me started.)

Yepper, no more washing cars or driveways, no power washing, no lawn watering except once a week on a designated day… and, no more automatic sprinklers at all! YAY! (You can tell who is not cooperating by the colour of their lawn!)

The illusion that we ‘don’t have enough water’ is one perspective: The reality is that we have ‘enough’ water for now, but not enough for the future if we continue to waste at this rate. (Or, god forbid, sell off this natural resource.)

One solution is to tap into the salt water venues, which there are plenty of here on the coast; but then we would have to find more energy to treat salt water. Desalination could actually work, but who is going to take the initiative to set this up? California’s drought is far worse than what is going on here up north…and they are begging for water! Why didn’t/hasn’t anyone addressed these issues by now?

In feng shui, water is one of the Five Elements that plays a role in the balance of our lives. If we don’t preserve this element now, what consequences are we going to face in the future? Conservation and planning is everyone’s responsibility.

Hang on, as it is going to be a rough ride, unless we speak up.

All the best,

Kathryn

Being a guest on Kathryn’s radio show, Practical Solutions for Life, was a great experience. Kathryn took me step by step to prepare me for what to expect (especially in case of technical difficulties). She asked very clear questions and was a generous and supportive host. She put me at ease and the show came out great!
